How the planner works

Set how many nights you stay at each stop. I split the driving between stops into daily legs within your max driving time and suggest an overnight on the way, preferably a campsite that takes your vehicle according to OpenStreetMap. Two places out of three say nothing about it, so check the suggestion before you drive. Then the trip is totalled against your holiday length, and the route is drawn on the Map tab.

Improve the map

Every pin and road here comes from OpenStreetMap — a free, open map that anyone can edit. If an aire, campsite or dump station is missing, wrong or has closed, you can fix it, and the change flows back here at the next data update. Here's how.

! Quickest: leave a Note

  1. Open openstreetmap.org and find the spot.
  2. Click the speech-bubble icon (right toolbar) to add a Note — no account needed.
  3. Describe what's wrong or missing (e.g. "dump station here, 3 €") and post it. A local mapper picks it up.

  1. Create a free account on openstreetmap.org.
  2. Find the place, click Edit — the beginner-friendly iD editor opens in the browser.
  3. Drop a point and pick a preset: Caravan/RV Site, Campsite or Sanitary Dump Station.
  4. Fill in what you know — name, fee, capacity, opening hours, whether there's a dump station.
  5. Save with a short comment (e.g. "added aire, visited July 2026").

Speed

80 km/h outside built-up areas for Anhängerzüge. On motorway and expressway 100 km/h if the trailer's gross weight does not exceed 3.5 t. Both caps apply even where the sign shows more (Abs. 3).

Dimensions — three of the four figures stand in the act, not in the regulation

Here the delegation runs the other way from Estonia and Portugal. Switzerland writes the figures themselves into the statute and lets the regulation fill in the rest. Strassenverkehrsgesetz (SVG, SR 741.01) art. 9 Abs. 1, Stand 1.7.2026:

Das höchstzulässige Gewicht für Fahrzeuge oder Fahrzeugkombinationen beträgt 40 t, im kombinierten Verkehr 44 t; die maximal zulässige Höhe beträgt 4 m und die maximal zulässige Breite 2,55 m beziehungsweise für klimatisierte Fahrzeuge 2,6 m. Die Höchstlänge für Fahrzeugkombinationen beträgt 18,75 m.

Abs. 1bis hands over the details: "Der Bundesrat erlässt Vorschriften über Ausmasse und Gewichte der Motorfahrzeuge und ihrer Anhänger." That is the empowerment the Verkehrsregelnverordnung (VRV, SR 741.11) art. 64–66 rests on — each article heading carries the reference (Art. 9 Abs. 1 SVG) in its own text.

The wordings:

Art. 64 Abs. 1. Motorfahrzeuge und Anhänger dürfen 2,55 m, klimatisierte Fahrzeuge, deren feste oder abnehmbare Aufbauten besonders für die Beförderung von Gütern in temperaturgeführtem Zustand ausgerüstet sind und deren Seitenwände einschliesslich der Wärmedämmung mindestens 45 mm dick sind, 2,60 m breit sein.

Art. 65 Abs. 1. Die Länge der Fahrzeuge darf ohne Ladung höchstens betragen für: a. Motorwagen, ausgenommen Gesellschaftswagen 12,00 —

b. Anhänger, ausgenommen Sattelanhänger 12,00 — … e. Sattelmotorfahrzeuge 16,50 — f. Anhängerzüge 18,75 — g. Gelenkbusse 18,75

Art. 66. Die Höhe der Fahrzeuge darf mit der Ladung höchstens 4 m betragen.

The measuring method differs within the same regulation. The length is measured ohne Ladung, the height mit der Ladung. That is not the same as France's and Italy's "coupling device included" or Finland's "drawbar excluded" — here it is the load that counts into one dimension and out of the other, in two articles standing next to each other. A bicycle rack on the caravan's rear wall therefore does not affect the length, but a roof box affects the height.

The word Anhängerzug is not defined anywhere in the VRV or the VTS. A search for Anhängerzug followed by ist, sind, gilt or gelten gives zero hits in both instruments. It is the same undefined word that carries the 80 limit in art. 5 Abs. 1 Bst. a Ziff. 2, the one already in the site's cap — so if the word did not catch the caravan outfit, both the speed and the length would fall.

They do not have to, because the act stands above the regulation and the act says something wider: SVG art. 9 Abs. 1 sets 18.75 m for Fahrzeugkombinationen, without restriction to any vehicle class. That the caravan is an Anhänger follows from the VTS (SR 741.41) art. 20 Abs. 2 Bst. c: "«Wohnanhänger» sind Anhänger, bei denen mindestens drei Viertel des zur Verfügung stehenden Volumens (inkl. Gepäckraum) als Wohnraum eingerichtet ist" — a Transportanhänger, that is, a trailer. Car plus trailer is a vehicle combination. 18.75 applies.

A rule no neighbour has in the same form. VRV art. 65a Kreisfahrt, in force since 2022-04-01:

Motorfahrzeuge und Fahrzeugkombinationen im Fahrzustand müssen sich in einer Kreisringfläche mit einem äusseren Durchmesser von 25 m und einem inneren Durchmesser von 10,60 m bewegen können.

Outer diameter 25 m, inner 10.60 m — the same figures as Belgium's turning-radius requirement, but expressed as diameters instead of radii (12.50 and 5.30). The requirement expressly applies to Fahrzeugkombinationen, so to a caravan outfit as well. It is not a dimension that can be shown in an app: it depends on the towing car's wheelbase and the caravan's drawbar length, not on any figure in the registration document.

Method note: fedlex.admin.ch is also an SPA, and the file path has a trap. The addresses under /eli/cc/... answer 200 with a 77,151-byte shell. The text lies in the file store, following the pattern

where the suffix -N exists for some acts and is absent for others: the VRV requires -4, the VTS and SVG require none at all. The wrong form silently returns the shell with status 200. Which form applies can be read from the network log when the page is opened in a browser — not from the address.
