Improve the map

Every pin and road here comes from OpenStreetMap — a free, open map that anyone can edit. If an aire, campsite or dump station is missing, wrong or has closed, you can fix it, and the change flows back here at the next data update. Here's how.

! Quickest: leave a Note

  1. Open openstreetmap.org and find the spot.
  2. Click the speech-bubble icon (right toolbar) to add a Note — no account needed.
  3. Describe what's wrong or missing (e.g. "dump station here, 3 €") and post it. A local mapper picks it up.

✎ Edit it yourself

  1. Create a free account on openstreetmap.org.
  2. Find the place, click Edit — the beginner-friendly iD editor opens in the browser.
  3. Drop a point and pick a preset: Caravan/RV Site, Campsite or Sanitary Dump Station.
  4. Fill in what you know — name, fee, capacity, opening hours, whether there's a dump station.
  5. Save with a short comment (e.g. "added aire, visited July 2026").

Towing a caravan in Sweden

The Swedish caravan limit is not a road rule but a vehicle rule. It travels with the outfit, whatever the sign at the roadside says.

80 applies where the sign says 120

With a braked caravan you may drive at most 80 km/h. That ceiling holds on motorways too, on roads where the car alone would be allowed 110 or 120. Signs can never raise your ceiling, only lower it.

  • 80 km/h with a braked trailer or caravan.
  • 80 km/h with an unbraked trailer or caravan up to 750 kg permitted mass, if that mass does not exceed half the car’s kerb weight, or if the trailer is unladen and its own service weight does not exceed half the car’s kerb weight.
  • 40 km/h with an unbraked trailer or caravan when that weight relation is not met.
  • 40 km/h with a trailer having an articulated drawbar and overrun brake, for instance a steering front axle.

Transportstyrelsen states 80 km/h as the ceiling with a braked caravan and names no procedure for exceeding it. Sweden has no counterpart to the German Tempo 100, which requires a plate and an entry in the trailer’s papers.

Licence and car each set a limit

How heavy a caravan you may tow is decided by two things at once: the car’s technical weights and your licence category. The lower of them governs.

  • B, first case: trailer permitted mass up to 750 kg.
  • B, second case: above 750 kg, car and trailer together may not exceed 3 500 kg permitted mass.
  • Extended B (B96): car up to 3 500 kg, combination up to 4 250 kg.
  • BE: car up to 3 500 kg, trailers up to 3 500 kg in total.

European licence law often applies grandfather rights: a B licence obtained before 1 July 1996 carries the right to drive a car over 3 500 kg — but the right lapses if the licence became invalid and was issued anew after that date.

What to read on the registration certificate

The car’s certificate carries the numbers that decide the matter, and they may be lower than what the caravan’s own certificate allows: the maximum braked trailer weight, the maximum unbraked trailer weight (only on later model years), the maximum combined gross weight of car and trailer including load, the maximum trailer weight for a B licence, and the car’s kerb weight — the figure the unbraked-trailer speed rule takes half of.

Transportstyrelsen runs an e-service, Släpvagnskalkylatorn, that works out both what you may tow and how fast. Campeur does not know your outfit’s weights and never calculates with them: we plan Sweden at 80 km/h, the ceiling for a braked caravan.
