Improve the map

Every pin and road here comes from OpenStreetMap — a free, open map that anyone can edit. If an aire, campsite or dump station is missing, wrong or has closed, you can fix it, and the change flows back here at the next data update. Here's how.

! Quickest: leave a Note

  1. Open openstreetmap.org and find the spot.
  2. Click the speech-bubble icon (right toolbar) to add a Note — no account needed.
  3. Describe what's wrong or missing (e.g. "dump station here, 3 €") and post it. A local mapper picks it up.

✎ Edit it yourself

  1. Create a free account on openstreetmap.org.
  2. Find the place, click Edit — the beginner-friendly iD editor opens in the browser.
  3. Drop a point and pick a preset: Caravan/RV Site, Campsite or Sanitary Dump Station.
  4. Fill in what you know — name, fee, capacity, opening hours, whether there's a dump station.
  5. Save with a short comment (e.g. "added aire, visited July 2026").

Useful for campers

  • Campsite — tourism=camp_site
  • Dump station — amenity=sanitary_dump_station
  • Fee — fee=yes/no, charge=…

Towing a caravan in Austria

Almost every caravan heading south crosses Austria, and the speed that applies to you turns on a detail that is easy to miss: not what your car weighs, but how the outfit is classified.

The limit depends on the trailer, not the car

Town / open road (Freiland) / Autostraße / Autobahn:

  • Car up to 3 500 kg with a light trailer, i.e. up to 750 kg (licence class B): 50 / 100 / 100 / 100 km/h.
  • Car up to 3 500 kg with any trailer where the two permitted masses add up to no more than 3 500 kg (class B): 50 / 80 / 100 / 100 km/h.
  • Car up to 3 500 kg with a trailer permitted under the car’s type approval (class BE) — the ordinary caravan case: 50 / 70 / 80 / 80 km/h.
  • Vehicle over 3 500 kg, whether towing or not (class C): 50 / 70 / 80 / 80 km/h.
  • With snow chains fitted: 50 km/h everywhere, as a recommendation.

Campeur plans Austria at 70 km/h, the open-road figure for the BE case, so motorway legs come out a little pessimistic. The front page explains why the limit is one number per country and why it is set low.

IG-L limits are posted, not predictable

A provincial governor may impose lower speed limits under the air-quality act (Immissionsschutzgesetz – Luft). They are signposted with a supplementary plate reading “IG-L”, and on motorway and Schnellstraße sections they do not apply to vehicles with Austrian green E-plates where that exemption is signposted too. Campeur does not know where these apply and does not model them.

The vignette

Austrian motorways and Schnellstraßen have required a vignette since 1997. ASFINAG states the requirement for cars, motorcycles and motorhomes up to 3.5 t technically permitted mass; it does not list trailers separately. It must be in place before you join a tolled road, not bought afterwards. Category B prices in force from 1 December 2025:

  • 1 day € 9.60 · 10 days € 12.80 · 2 months € 32.00 · 1 year € 106.80.
  • The digital vignette is tied to the number plate. 2026 is the last year the sticker is sold; from the 2027 vignette year only the digital one exists.
  • Bought online, a 1-day or 10-day vignette can be made valid immediately, but a 2-month or annual one is valid at the earliest on the 18th day after purchase, under consumer-protection rules. That one catches people out.
  • Four sections are outside the requirement: the A1 between the Walserberg border and Salzburg Nord, the A12 between the Kufstein border and Kufstein-Süd, the A14 between the Hörbranz border and Hohenems, and the A26 in Linz until it connects to the A7.
  • Certain tunnels and passes carry a separate route toll (Streckenmaut) on top of the vignette.
